Junction Gate
Although FTL travel is not possible, vast expanses of the universe can be traversed easily via giant portals known as Junction Gates.
These gates are bound to each other so that entering one from any point in the universe would allow you to exit from its complimentary gate elsewhere instantly.
Creation
When these gates are first created, they are physically touching, but once activated are then moved apart to allow for fast-travel.
